How does this opening sound? "The detrimental effects of consumerism on the general public can be easily perceived year-round. The notion of spending money continually is an attractive one for many, particularly when people believe that they are being benefited by their actions. “Treats” such as the boldly advertised “X% cash back!” on credit cards and other mediums for purchasing captivate the population – but are capitalism and consumerism truly that simple?"
Sounds great to me!
It's the start to a response to a synthesis prompt about the positive or negative effects that consumerism can bring to its devotees but I'm just not sure if the final line ought to be phrased like so.
I am personally never a big fan of questions in an introduction because it gives the reader an excuse to answer it themselves and avoid reading the rest. The intro is an opportunity to state grand exclamations which you will go on to support in your body paragraphs. So maybe change the last line to a bold exclamation rather than a question, but I do like it!
