Plz help, I WILL MEDAL :) What is the reasoning behind Lincoln’s referring to the South as “the rebellion”? Why does he continually use this term?
We read the emancipation proclamation btw!
Lincoln called the South "the rebellion" because of his concrete belief in the North. Originally the Civil War broke out as a result of Lincoln's election, growing economical tension between the North and South, and the development of the Abolition Movement. Later on in the war, Lincoln's motive changed slightly and focused more on the slavery aspect of it and refereed to the South as "the rebellion" because of their intense need to fight against him.
thank you so much! can you pretty please help me to understand this passage from the proclamation… By general law, life and limb must be protected; yet often a limb must be amputated to save a life, but a life is never wisely given to save a limb. I felt that measures, otherwise unconstitutional, might become lawful by becoming indispensable to the preservation of the Constitution through the preservation of the nation. Right or wrong, I assumed this ground, and now avow it. I could not feel that to the best of my ability I had even tried to preserve the Constitution, if, to save slavery, or any minor matter, I should permit the wreck of government, country, and Constitution altogether.
Sure, no problem. Right here in particular, Lincoln is comparing the right and wrong between the unconstitutional acts previous, some done by him, some done by others, and what the Constitution really represents. When he says "might become lawful by becoming indispensable to the preservation of the Constitution through the preservation of the nation" he is admitting that although it doesn't say anywhere in the Constitution that slavery is or is not illegal, Lincoln's belief that it is is going to be the driving force behind keeping the nation together as a whole. When he says "Right or wrong, I assumed this ground, and now avow it" he is proclaiming that he will fully stand by his choice to free the slaves, despite the actions against him by the South.
what does he mean by life and limb?
constitution and the idea of slavery??
Life refers to the actual lives of the people fighting for the cause, while limb refers to the injuries acquired during battle. Its saying that "By general law.." both are protected but the often times soldiers loose their limbs, or are seriously injured, to save someone (in this case, the slaved) BUT it hardly ever happens that someone dies to save someone's limb. There is also a more symbolic connotation to the phrase if you are interested...
Yes, both
wow thank you so much.. you're the only one on here who has actually helped me :)
I was taught how to completely answer a question.. I obviously honor it :) Thanks :)
