College tuition? Advice? Info is below. (:

OpenStudy (kmullis6):

I'm turning 16 next week & I thought this summer would be the time to get a job. I'm planning on working at a dog boarding facility & after taxes, as a minor, I'm expecting around $120 a week, maybe less. Anyways, for college, I'm planning on going to The Los Angeles Film School and I'm moving from Florida, but obviously I have to be accepted, but tuition is around $50,000. It's really high, and I don't know, unless I get a scholarship, how I'm going to do that. Once I get my job, I will probably be expected to pay for my cell phone bill, and car insurance. I just don't really see how it's possible to pay it. You will probably all say that my parents will help, my they're not too supportive with me moving to California. Anyways, how should I go about saving up? Is taking out loans really that big of a deal, because honestly, I don't mind doing that. It would take a while to pay off, of course, but if it means me being successful, I'll do it. :D

First, I'm sorry it took so long for someone to respond... Second, i'm only 15 Third, I'll give it a shot based on what I've heard... It is a good idea to first look at how much the tuition is, on top of how much it would cost to live there, eat there, dorm room, books, supplies... etc... so i figure you're probably gonna spend about another 5-10 thousand depending on how extravagant you are.... Then, you can start saving up. your job sounds good, and so I calculated about how long it would take for you to save up enough to attend this college; with your cost of living and all, so since it is roughly gonna be 60,000... so that's about 500 months... that's quite a while, so you might want to ask for help. Scholarships are great! to increase your likelihood of getting a scholarship, it helps o make a memorable resume... student loans actually are kinda a big deal, since it takes forever to pay off, and there is interest and all... i would recommend you do everything you can first.... you could ask your parents to help you out....

i don't know if you still need advice, or if you want to listen to a 15 year old's advice... but yeah... that's what I got, and I hope it was helpful...

Well, there's always financial aid, and scholarships/ grants. But of course, sometimes, those are not enough for a student. Unless you are at a high academic standing, meaning 3.8-4.0 GPA + extracurricular activities, they may offer you a full ride, which basically means, they pay for your school, so long as you maintain a certain gpa in college (I'm assuming ~3.5+ gpa). If you don't get a full-ride. There's always what every student in U.S has: \(\sf \color{red}{loans}\). Unfortunately, it is inevitable. Just make sure that you finish what you started if you do take on loans because they do add up. Also, If you don't get much financial aid (this really depends on family income/ earnings), you might also want to consider going to other, less costly universities. $50k sounds like private university pricing. Also, you might want to consider living OFF campus rather than ON campus.

Financial Aide is always there. If you plan to go to a 4-year university, check in with Community Colleges that do transfer programs! I am a junior, graduating early, and I have a fee waiver, which is very helpful, seeing that you don't have to pay for the SAT'S, or College Apps. Good luck!
