Why do markets exist?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

My sleek-feathered one my sleek-feathered one ... we needs to get you a tutor forreal..lol Markets exist so that people can exchange stuff they have for other stuff they don't have, but want or need. That 'stuff' could be money, physical goods, ideas, or services. Current markets are nothing more than advanced bartering systems. For example, when you enter the workforce, you are bringing yourself (ie your skills, talents) to market, in exchange for money (something you need but will not have unless you work). Then you can use the money you earn to barter (trade) for goods and services. Buying something is really just another form of bartering. The concept of money allows trade to occur more rapidly and on a much larger scale as you no longer have to trade exclusively in physical goods or labor. Imagine the hassle of shipping your cow or corn harvest to Dell in exchange for a laptop.
