Is the following an example of inductive reasoning or deductive reasoning? Your soccer coach tells you it is wise to drink a lot of fluids during practice so you don’t get dehydrated. Before practice, you buy a two bottles of water and a bottle of sports drink to bring to practice. A. Inductive reasoning B. Deductive reasoning

@jigglypuff314

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I think deductive http://www.ehow.com/facts_5171103_inductive-versus-deductive-reasoning.html but I'm not sure :P

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Hmm.. maybe A? O.o

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Wait, what? O.O

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

deductive reasoning is given a rule, you use it. like if the definition of a quadrilateral is that it is a shape that has 4 sides. then you look at a square which has 4 sides, you decide that a square is a quadrilateral; inductive reasoning is like over multiple examples you come to a conclusion like the precious practices you didn't drink water so you got dehydrated so practices makes you dehydrated but the question wasn't like that, it was that the coach told you a general rule. so deductive http://www.thatquiz.org/tq/previewtest?Y/Z/L/T/14841329498191

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

This is inductive reasoning, since "the conclusion is reached by generalizing or extrapolating from initial information." ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deductive_reasoning)

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Confused... which one is right?? O.O

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

idk >,<

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Hmm, I hate this unit, i'd rather do slopes >,<

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Hold on, let me find some examples that might help.

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

Deductive reasoning starts with something that is known and working from that to something that is logically certain. In this case, you can't be certain from what your coach told you whether you should drink coffee or water during practice. All he said was "fluids". Since your conclusion is not logically certain, this is an example of inductive logic.

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

You make 8 free throws out of 10 attempts during baseball practice. You conclude that you will make 80% of your free throws during next weeks practice. This kind of reasoning is inductive. (This is an example in my book)

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

Right, you're making a conclusion without enough evidence to be sure. Next week you might not make any free throws at all, or all of them.

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

The interest rate on your 12-month certificate of deposit is 2% simple interest (no compounding). Your CD is for $1000. You conclude that you will earn $20 in interest over the 12-month period. This reasoning is deductive.

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

Yes, due to the evidence you have, as long as you perform the calculations correctly, you will be right 100% of the time.

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

So, for the question all the way at the top, its B?

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

I think it's A, since the information the coach told us only allows us to make uncertain conclusions.

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

If it was B, we'd know what fluids to get.

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Ah, I see! Then A it is, thanks :) Can you help with a few more?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

I still think it's deductive because you're not given that he's doing trails or anything either

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Hmm...

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

Sure, I'm up for more. More logic questions?

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Is the following an example of inductive reasoning or deductive reasoning? For the last five days in a row, you went into a local store and bought a bottle of orange juice. The owner of the store charged you $1.39. When you go into the store today to buy a bottle of orange juice, you expect to pay $1.39. A. Inductive reasoning B. Deductive reasoning I say A

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yep :)

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

okie =) thanks

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

Is the following an example of inductive reasoning or deductive reasoning? The local meteorologist predicts heavy rain in the afternoon. Instead of planning to walk to your friend’s house after band practice, you arrange for your mother to give you a ride there and to pick you up. A. Inductive reasoning B. Deductive reasoning

OpenStudy (lukebluefive):

A, since meteorologists just guess, especially where I live...

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

If this one is deductive, then the coach fluid question should be deductive as well

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

you're using information provided to you to come to a conclusion: deductive an inductive question would have given statistics like the previous one!

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

I'm done, thanks Emily :) Btw, you where right about all of them ;) Your smart and you don't even know it!? XD

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

lol XD

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

What?? X3

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

that I was correct :P

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

So, you think its funny that your correct? XO OMG!

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

lol :P I gtg, I've got flute lesson, and essays ;) see ya later! <3

OpenStudy (lovelyanna):

See ya later! Have fun ;)
