The figure below shows two similar pictures that Jeremy wants to frame. Jeremy has 5 strips of unfinished molding that he wants to use to frame the two pictures. Each strip is 36 inches long. Assuming there is no wastage or overlap of molding, what is the minimum length of molding, in inches, Jeremy still requires to frame both the pictures? Show your work and explain your reasoning in complete sentences

this is the last question if you can just explain it then maybe i would know how to do it because at this point i have no clue what the question is trying to say or ask

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

Find the perimeter of each rectangle?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i multiply the two sides together is what your trying to say?

OpenStudy (agent0smith):

The missing side can be found using the proportion \[\Large \frac{ x }{ 16 }= \frac{ 58.5 }{13 }\] perimeter means you ADD up all the sides of a shape.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so im a little dumb so i need to kinda understand it part by part so you want me to add 58.5+ 13+ 16 = x? or cross multiply

OpenStudy (bibby):

He wants you to find the missing side of the other rectangle using the proportion. then add up to find the perimeters of both rectangles

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but which proportion (sorry for being dumb)

OpenStudy (bibby):

The one he just set up. You have the 13:58.5 and 16:x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so will it be 87.5 = x?

OpenStudy (bibby):

how'd you get 87.5? I got a different number. cross multiply\[\Large \frac{ x }{ 16 }= \frac{ 58.5 }{13 }\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh sorry so will it be 936 = 13x? and then 72 = x?

OpenStudy (bibby):

Exactly. now you havee these 2 shapes |dw:1392867046539:dw| and the fact that we have "5 strips of unfinished molding. Each strip is 36 inches long." Start by finding the perimeter of both

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4212 for the left and the right one is 208 please don't be mad is i have the wrong answer

OpenStudy (bibby):

lol I'm not going to hit you if you get the wrong answer. Don't apologize to me :D We're framing the pictures, so we want the PERIMETER. The perimeter is the sum of the sides bounding the shape. You're finding the area.|dw:1392867298625:dw| here's a hint
