Which of the following describes the graph of {x | 1 < x < 2}? a.open circles on 1 and 2 b.open circles on 1 and 2, arrows pointing out c.open circles on 1 and 2, line segment between d.no solution

OpenStudy (anonymous):

B: (open circles on 1 and 2,,arrows pointing out)

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

np ;)

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

just in case anyone wanna add to that

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@-StudyShark- : Mind how you determined that the arrows are pointing outward?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I meant: Mind explaining how ....

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

Ok now I don't know what to do?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@harrisonshark : I'd recommend that you graph all four answers and then compare the results to the given set of numbers.

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

ok I'll try

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

well this is union and insection algebra so sadly I don't that much about this.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Pls look at the graph I drew. The second circle was supposed to be around x = 2. This set of numbers includes ALL numbers not equal to 1 or 2. Make sense or not?

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

no

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Actually, that graph does represent all numbers except 1 and 2. Unfortunately, this does NOT represent the given set of numbers 1 < x < 2. So you must eliminate this first answer choice. Go on to the 2nd answer choice, please, and try graphing it on the number line.

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

K I did I believe it's either b or c

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Forgive me, but I'd like for you to graph the second possible answer, as well as the third. Forget about the fourth possibility. Willing to do that? I think the practice is important and worth your time and energy.

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

|dw:1392933641608:dw| is this how I do ?

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

you need to explain how I do it

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, except that you're also supposed to draw arrows pointing outward from each 1 and 2. This means one arrow points to the left, from 1, and the other arrow points to the right, from 2. Copy your own drawing and update it appropriately.

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

I'm using mac so I don't have a drawing system but ill try like this 1 2 <------------------->

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

I do not know how to do this lol

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I'm going to steal your drawing and modify it.

OpenStudy (harrisonshark):

ok

OpenStudy (mathmale):

|dw:1392933882937:dw| shows 2 crude arrows pointing outward, OK?
