how do you make a exponent

OpenStudy (31356):

Do you mean in Microsoft Word or in Math?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

\[that^{2}\]

OpenStudy (31356):

6^2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You can make an exponent with the ^ symbol x^2

OpenStudy (lieutenantgeneral):

Exponents are frequently found in business documents. You use exponents in mathematical expressions that raises a figure to a power. In finance, you see exponents in compound interest formulas. The best way to make an exponent with a computer keyboard is with a word processing program's superscript function. Simple text editor programs don't have the superscript formatting option; in that case, you can use a caret symbol or a double asterisk. These conventions are often used by software developers, engineers and scientists. Step 1 Start Microsoft Word on your computer. Step 2 Type a number or algebraic expression into a Word document. Press the "Ctrl," "Shift" and "=" keys on your keyboard to turn on the Superscript mode. Related Reading: What Are the Areas of a Computer Keyboard? Step 3 Enter another number or expression signifying the exponent. Superscript mode raises the level of the text and reduces the font size, producing a professional-looking exponent. Press "Ctrl," "Shift" and "=" again to turn off Superscript mode. This ensures that any text that follows the exponent is back on the normal level. Plain Text Step 1 Click "Start | All Programs | Accessories | Notepad." Step 2 Key a number or expression into a blank text document. Step 3 Press the "Shift" and "6" keys to enter a caret symbol. Alternatively, type two asterisks in a row. Enter the exponent. Step 4 End the expression by pressing the "Enter" key. Simple text editors do not support superscripting, so all the characters you type are on the same level and have the same size.
