What value of x makes the equation true? –4.9 = –5.7 + x A. x = –10.6 B. x = –0.8 C. x = 0.8 D. x = 10.6
please help will give you a metal!
You want to seperate your numbers and your variable to get x by itself. Right now your equation is in /somenumber/ + x= /somenumber/ when you want it in x= /somenumber/ + /somenumber/. If you plan on moving forward in mathematics classes, you'll need to learn this. So, your equation is –4.9 = –5.7 + x. What can you do to the right hand side of the equation to get the x by itself? What would you subtract/add?
Noooo, nonononono. Back up a step. Haha. You need an equation to solve something. An equations has two sides. Not one. You never, ever, want a single sided 'equation' if you're solving. So back to my question. What can you do to the right side, the side with two things on it?
@maridanield
Basically, that's right idea. But check your signs. When you subtract a negative number from a negative number, you add them. And this is why I say basically. You have to focus on the fact that you're removing it from the right side. I can not stress this enough. You. are. Removing. It . From. The. Right. Side. First. That means in order to get rid of -5.7, you have to ADD 5.7 to the right side. And the rule goes, "What you do to one side, you have to do to the other". If we subtracted, as you suggested, we would end up with -11.4 +x on the right hand side and be no better off than when we started.
so its -4.9 + -5.7 ???
