If f(x) = (5 x + 8) ^ { -2 }, find f'( 3 ).

OpenStudy (jdoe0001):

use the chain-rule I'd think

\(\Large\bf\color{royalblue}{\text{Welcome to OpenStudy! :)}}\) Applebanana, hah, I like that name :3

zepdrix (zepdrix):

\[\Large\bf\sf f(x)\quad=\quad (5x+8)^{-2}\]Start by applying the `power rule` to the -2 exponent. Then chain rule.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks :D

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Confused on anything? Remember than when you apply the Power Rule to `negative numbers`, they get LARGER in the negative direction. (More negative) So -2 will change to -3, NOT -1. Just something to keep in mind :3
