Will a magnet attract any metallic object, such as those made of aluminum or copper? (Try it and see.) Why is this so?

@ybarrap

OpenStudy (anonymous):

only ferromagnetic metals so the answer is nope. for the why, there's a good article on ferromagnetic metals on wikipedia, you should find the answer there

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I know that not all metals attract to an object, but I searched around for this alot but I dont understand..iron does attract but copper and others dont

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean to say magnet, sorry for the typo

OpenStudy (ybarrap):

No, because aluminum is paramagnetic and Copper is diamagnetic. Paramagnetic and Diamagnet materieals exhibit very small magnetic responses compared to ferromagnets, such as iron. Electrons in paramagnetic materials will align with an external magnetic field, while in diamagnetic materials, they will oppose the magnetic fields. Even for paramagnetic, the fields are very weak compared to ferromagnetic materials, which have "domains" of magnetic dipoles that have a stronger tendency to align with magnetic fields. http://hyperphysics.phy-astr.gsu.edu/Hbase/tables/magprop.html http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paramagnetism#cite_note-magneticValues-3 Hope this helps.

that makes sense thank you very much for clearing that and thank you for the websites, very helpful!
