OpenStudy (tester97):

How do i know if a sequence is arithmetic geometric or neither?

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

A sequence is an ordered list of numbers. An arithmetic sequence is a sequence in which the difference between any two consecutive terms is the same, such as: 3, 5, 7, 9, 11 You add 2 to get to the next number each time. The difference, in this case two is called the common difference. A geometric sequence is a sequence in which the quotient between any two consecutive terms is the same, such as: 2, 6, 18, 54, 162 You multiply by 3 each time to get to the next number. The quotient, in this case 3, is called the common ratio.

OpenStudy (tester97):

Ok so if i had a problem that said "robin brought a computer for $1250 and it depreciated in value bye 10% each year" that would be a geometric sequence?

OpenStudy (tester97):

oh wait no it would arithmetic because its subtracting 125 each year right?

OpenStudy (kittyjosh):

You are multiplying by 0.10 to depreciate the value each year. That does sound like its arithmetic, geometric, or neither to you?

OpenStudy (tester97):

Oh i was right at first geometric.
