Can someone help me out with this one?? A car rental agency advertised renting a luxury, full-size car for $39.95 per day and $0.19 per mile. If you rent this car for 5 days, how many miles can you drive if you only have $200 to spend.
question for you....does the $200 count towards the 39.95 per day for 5 days ? Because 39.95 for 5 days is 199.75. or is it asking : $200 just for the .19 cents per mile ? Not counting the 199.75 ? Do you understand what I am asking ?
Yes, it's saying you have $200 to spend for the 5 days you will rent it.
39.95(5) + 0.19x <= 200 199.75 + 0.19x <= 200 .19x <= 200 - 199.75 .19x <= .25 x <= .25/.19 x <= 1.31 miles weird answer...you better get a second opinion
Thanks you for the help! I will see if anyone else has an opinion!
good idea...lol
@amistre64 ...can you take a peek at this please
@dpasingh ...can you check this please...it just looks weird

@ganeshie8 ....help please
@whpalmer4 ...check this please
I agree that the solution seems a bit suspicious — it's correct, but suggests that maybe the problem is supposed to be slightly different. Not sure I see the value of doing this problem if we are interpreting it correctly. Not exactly rocket science to realize that 5*$39.95 isn't going to leave you much change from $200 to spend on mileage charges!
I just thought I did it wrong being that the person renting can only go a little more then a mile.....why bother renting then ?
its the thought process that is important. spose you go up to this company, and only have 200 dollars, would it be a practical purchase?
I suppose you could just rent the car to sit in it...lol
spose you are starting this company, and you determine that you have to use this formula to breakeven, otherwise you lose money. research shows that the median family freemoney is about 200, is starting the business a practical investment?
well...I suppose you would have customers that would be coming to rent with more money then that....I just do not know if it would be practical.
thanks amistre and whpalmer....It just didn't make much sense.
:) the important thing is that you know how to apply mathical principals to assess the situation. The outcome can then be applied to broader thought processes
true...thx so much
well...@ccd ...apparently my answer is correct. The renter just did not make a good business decision
One could imagine a variation on this problem where the $39.95 rental fee got you some flat number of "free" miles per day, and then it might not be such a bad choice to rent this car.
