if the sum of a number and one is tripled the result is five less than twice the number

OpenStudy (anonymous):

let the number be X then can u put the following sentence in to an equation "Sum of X and 1 is trippled" put that in mathematical form wil ya?

be quick.. my bed awaits my arrival!

idk

@mashy 's suggestions are correct. It's important that you choose a literal (a letter) to represent the unknown. Why not choose x for that purpose? Then "the sum of that number and one" is simply x+1.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If we triple that (multiply that by 3), we get 3(x+1). this is the left side of your equation. Now, again, the unknown number is x. How do you express "twice the number"? How do you show that the right side of the equation is 5 less than "twice the number"? Please write out whatever you can; then i could give you some helpful feedback.
