0.4n-1/7=5
assuming you need to solve for "n", do you have any idea how to start?
um not really :(
no problem. As a general rule, when solving for one variable, you, by definition, need to isolate it from the other number. you do this by removing all the numbers being added, subtracted, multiplied, or divided from the side that your variable, "n", is on. >>>>And you can move numbers from one side to the other by doing to them the opposite of what they're currently doing. By this I mean that if something is being subtracted, as in here, you have to add itself to both sides in order to cancel it out on one side, and move it to the other. IMPORTANT: If something is being multiplied, you divide that number (and visa versa), and if something is being added, you have to subtract it from itself and the other side to move it.<<<<<
i think the answer is 88.5 do you know?
I'm afraid that's incorrect. Show me your steps, and I can point out wherever the error is.
i times both sides by 7 to get rid of the 7 on the variable side. so then have 0.4n -1 =35 then i divided both sides by .4 to get the variable alone and had n-1 =87.5 then if I add 1 to both side to get n alone my answer was 88.5
Your first error is in the very first step. Refer back to what I said: Whenever something is being subtracted from one side of the equation, then you have to add itself to the side it's on and the other side to move it. You multiplied it, which would have been correct only if you were dividing the left side by it. A fraction by itself is never multiplied or divided. So, try adding it to the other side. Feel free to make it a decimal first.
0.4n-1 ------ =5 this is the problem 7
im confused at what your telling me to do
No, I'm afraid that's incorrect. You cannot just separate the parts of the fraction given. Fractions are never just broken up. Answer me this: is the "1/7" being added or subtracted in the original problem?
there is not a 1/7 in the original problem ill draw it out
no need, hold on
Your original problem was "0.4n-1/7=5". So, I'm saying that there is a "1/7" in the original problem because it's not really negative. In a way, it's just a positive number being subtracted. And how do we move numbers being subtracted from one side, to the other side? (according to what I said earlier)
the slash between the 1 and the seven is the underline the original problem looks like this
