how does ATP enable transport proteins to move ions across a cell membrane
Some transport proteins require energy in order to facilitate the active transport of materials across a cell membrane--typically it has to do with changing the shape of the transport protein. You can probably find cool videos on this ^^ I think it'd suffice to say that some transport proteins may have a binding site for ATP or the Pi of ATP or some other chemical that requires ATP investment indirectly in order to transport ions. Sodium/potassium pumps are a good example of ion transport. https://www.khanacademy.org/science/biology/human-biology/neuron-nervous-system/v/sodium-potassium-pump
Oh oh, if you're going against a concentration gradient, you'd need energy ^^
