hi

OpenStudy (oaktree):

So either 4x-3=5 or 4x-3=-5, by the definition of absolute value. So then x={2,-1/2}.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So, in order to solve absolute value equalities you need to set up two equations. 4X-3 = 5 4X-3 = -5 Using some basic algebra we get X = 2 or X = -1/2.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

CAN YOU EXPLAIN A LITTLE BETTER? PLEASE, IM STUCK ON THIS

OpenStudy (oaktree):

The absolute value means that the thing on the inside can be either the positive or the negative, right? Since absolute value of 5 is 5 and absolute value of -5 is also 5, so both work. And so we just set up the two equations equal to both 5 and -5 and solve algebraically.

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Maybe you could tell us exactly what you're confused about? And @Nightarrow, that's not really helpful. KhanAcademy isn't nearly the same as what OpenStudy is all about.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

First you add the 3 so it's then | 4x | = 8, then you divide the 4, so the answer is x = 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I`m sorry @OakTree, I just felt that KhanAcademy was a helpful source and could help @iribeiro1602 with her dilemma.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I LIKE KHAN ACADEMY A LOT LOL!

OpenStudy (oaktree):

@LillianM, that's invalid. You can't take out the absolute value like that.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

SO THE ANSWER WILL BE x={2,-1/2}

OpenStudy (anonymous):

?

OpenStudy (oaktree):

Yeah it will.

THANK YOU GUYSS! :)
