Jason baby-sits weekends for $3.50 an hour.. He is saving money for a new stereo. he needs a total of $200.00 to purchase the stereo. So far , He has $60.00. Write and solve an equation to find the number of additional hours(h) Jason needs to baby sit to buy the stereo..

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Alright, to start, we can use an inequality to solve this. So, how much money do you need at minimum?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

in the question it says he needs 200 dollars

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Correct, so you could say that the amount of money you have and need to get must be greater than or equal $200. So now our inequality begins to piece together: (Amount of money you have + the amount you need)is greater than or equal to $200. Understand so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes I think so

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Alright, so now we must put the other half of the inequality together. To start doing so, tell me: how much do you have presently?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be that he needs 140 more

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Well, yes, but tell me how much Jason has at present. The fact that he needs 150 more will be used in the next step.

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

*140

OpenStudy (anonymous):

at present he has 60 .. maybe I am misunderstanding im sorry

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

It's fine. Anyway, now we can add one more part to the equality: "(what you still need)+\[60\ge200\]" Any questions so far?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

60\[\ge \] 200 + 140 .. I have a lot of trouble in this my teacher I asked her to help and she says to work it out myself

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im in the 6th grade

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

That's an...interesting..."teaching" method. Why'd you add 140 to the 200?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the equation is suppose to be together it separated it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wasn't tryin to add it together

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

then why'd you state \[60\ge200+140\] ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not sure thought I was suppose to add what he needed to how much he had

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i thought i was suppose to

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

No, follow my instructions. Just answer my previous question: do you understand how I got "(what you need) + 60 is greater than or equal to 200"?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i think we have done problems similar to that

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Alright, then we'll go to the next and final step: adding in what Jason still needs to earn to meet and/or exceed his goal. Take a look at the only piece of info that we've ignored until now: his rate of pay per hour. Any ideas on how that could be used here?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my mom i think just figured it out... just need to know if the answer is right... my mom worked it out like this 200-60=140 then 140/3.5 = 40 ?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Correct!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank she went back and read what u were saying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Alright. Any more questions?

OpenStudy (noseboy908):

Do you have anymore questions you need help with?
