I just started a new English class, can anyone help me with a few questions? :/

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sure :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

what's the question?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It's on a poem "When I Was Fair and Young" by Queen Elizabeth I circa 1585 When I was fair and young, then favor graced me.  Of many was I sought their mistriss for to be, But I did scorn them all and answered them therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. How many weeping eyes I made to pine in woe, How many sighing hearts I have not skill to show, But I the prouder grew and still this spake therefore: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. Then spake fair Venus' son, that brave victorious boy, Saying: You dainty dame, for that you be so coy, I will so pluck your plumes as you shall say no more: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more. As soon as he had said, such change grew in my breast That neither night nor day I could take any rest. Wherefore I did repent that I had said before: Go, go, go, seek some other where, importune me no more.

6. Analyze the author’s use of syntax in this text. Are the sentences long or short? Does the author use punctuation to slow down the pace, or short phrases to quicken it? Explain how the sentence structure contributes to the emotional power of the piece.

6. 7. Select a tone (or multiple tones) from the list of Tone Words. Explain why this tone is the best way to describe this text.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well do you know what Imagery is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, i don't understand this poem though and i have half an hour to get it done.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Imagery is any descriptive world that appeals to any one of the senses such as, sight, sound, taste, touch, or smell. If i'm correct(:

I was able to answer #7: Tones are....regret,mornful,authoritative,unhappy,miserable are some of the tones of the poem. These tones are the best way to describe this poem because this poem is about her reminiscing when she was young and they show regret, and what she had a chance to get but lost and they also show her power and authority. I would say the sentences are predominantly short but there are however a few long ones. The author uses punctuation to slow down the pace of the poem which means we read it slowly and this contributes to the emotional power of the piece by building suspense and magnifying the emotional power. The length creates a rhythm and prevents tedium. the short sentences magnify the emotional power of the piece, holding up a vision of her overwhelming regret at not making the right choices when she was young, so the reader cannot look away and can sympathize with her.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for #5: She included that this all happened when she was young which leads us to believe that it has stopped now that she is older, if u noticed she also named venus as an example this is meant to be a proof to us sort of like a way of saying she is not lying to us but is stating the truth.
