wendy goes to sears to buy a dress. sears is having a sale on all dresses for 30 percent off. wendy buys the dress for $40 after the discount. what was the original price. can someone walk me through this problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30% of what is 40 ? so what does this mean in an equation can you set it up ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@smartowls

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont understand

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ninab is the one who doesnt understand. The equation is X*0.7=40, so X=57.1 or so

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how the heck did you get that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The equation is original price * (1 - discountpercent) = discounted price.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how to find the original price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

actually if u put 0.3x=40 x= 133.33

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30% of what number (x) is $40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but how do we find x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ninab confirmed for dumb. I said (1 - discount)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@smartowls Do you know algebra yet? If so, reword the equation so that x = 40 / 0.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well as far as my age is concerned i should know this

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Mertsj this is correct right 0.3x=40 to find original price

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so i need to divde 40 by o.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

0.3 not sure how he got 0.7

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not sure how he got 0.7 or how you got 0.3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30% of what (x) is 40 if we put 30% into decimal it is 0.3x=40

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ninab731 No offense, but you are wrong m8. @smartowls You find 0.7 because it is the percentage of price left after the discount. The discount was 30%, or 0.3, so 0.7 is what is left.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh thanks let me try both out to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im rounding the answer so my answer should be 57.14

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if u divide by 0.3 u get 133.3333333 so 133.33 if u multiply that by 0.3 u get 39.999 round that up and get $40 and also the other way is also correct just saying

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well let me see

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ninab731 She buys it for 30% off, so she pays 70% for the item. Therefore original price * 0.7 = what she pays

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ninab731 i got $40.01 using D35TR0Y3R's formula
