A conveyor belt is moving horizontally with a constant speed of 7 m/s [with respect to earth]. A bag of sand with mass of 100 kg dropped onto the belt from a negligible height. The coefficient of kinetic friction between the belt and the bag has a value of 0.35, and the static coefficient is 0.80 @roadjester

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a) what is the displacement of the bag [wrt earth] by the time it reaches the speed of the belt? b) what is the displacement of the bag [wrt belt] by the time it reaches the speed of the belt?

OpenStudy (roadjester):

So the bag does not stay where it lands? It also moves while on the moving belt?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (roadjester):

That doesn't make sense...there's no external force on the bag so it should be moving only when the belt moves. Meaning that in the inertial frame of the belt, the bag should not be moving. |dw:1393793502991:dw|
