Please help Me (GEOMETRY) Point A is located at (-8,3), is the location of the storage closet and point C, located at (12,4) , is the directors office. Find point B, the location of the art supplies, if it is 2/5 the distance from point A to point C

OpenStudy (anonymous):

then wat u need to finish wat u r asking

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have to find 2/5 of the distance from (-8,3) to (12,4) @zendaya-replay-guy @marchimallowy @mathmale Can you help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay maybe

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry cant help

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Kendra: First, think about how you'd calculate the distance from (-8,3) to (12,4). Once you have that, we'll calculate 2/5 of that distance and then use the result to find the coordinates of the point that is that far along the way to (12,4).

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@KendraB0522 : I'd really like to help you, but after waiting 5-10 minutes for more involvement on your part, I'm moving on to answer other questions. If you'd like to continue working with me, reply, and I'll respond whenever possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry im working on the distance formula. i really appreciate your patience.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got the square root of 401@mathmale

OpenStudy (mathmale):

that looks appropriate. Now suppose, Kendra, that you start at point (-8,3) and move towards the point (12,4). By how much does your x-coordinate change? By how much does your y-coordinate change? If you can answer these questions, we'll take the x-coordinate (-8) of (-8,3) and add 2/5 of the change in x. Can you calculate this?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont know how to figure that out.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Kendra, you've actually done the work already. If you move from (-8,3) to (12,4), your x-coord. changes by +20. What is 2/5 of 20?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

8 but how did you get 20?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

If you move from (-8,3) to (12,4), your x-coord. changes by +20: Subtract the x-coord. of the 1st point from the x-coord. of the 2nd point: 12-(-8)=20. If you move from (-8,3) to (12,4), your y-coord. changes by how much? Please show your work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4-3 =1?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So, how do we calculate the coordinates of Point B? The x-coordinate of Point B will be -8 + (2/3)(20). Look at that carefully; does that statement make sense to you? If not, how would you yourself calculate the x-coord. of point B?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how did u get -8+(2/3)(20)?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

I think we really need a diagram here. I'll draw the starting point (-8,3) and the ending point (12,4).

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im about to switch classes ill be back on at about 12:30 ish thank you for your help so far!
