Why do sound waves travel at different speeds in each gas? (gases are : air, carbon dioxide, and helium)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@timo86m

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i guess it is the density of it.

OpenStudy (theeric):

Sounds like a good guess, @timo86m! What do you think, @QueenBee232

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I agree could you be a little more specific though?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well the less space between atoms the less collisions the less sound.

OpenStudy (samgrace):

the bulk modulus of the medium effects the propagation speed of pressure waves, this is a ratio of density and fractional change in volume. Moduli is a fancy word for a unit of some kind e.g youngs modulus for a material's 'sterdyness'.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

awesome thank you!! :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I'm not sure who to give the medal to though :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I guess since timo answered first he should get it

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank u!! :)
