Fern: I'd be happy to help, but would like to see what you yourself have done towards solving this problem. Hint: What would LCD mean in this context, and how would you find it?
@mathmale i do not know how to find the LCD here since there are variables. unless it is the same step? LCD for 3, 4, 7?
Yes...the procedure for finding the LCD is exactly the same as when the denominators of your fractions are integers such as {3,4,7}.
@mathmale alright, did that, i think i got it (looked through some old notes to refresh my memory) x = 3
Fern: Great! But before you choose an answer, be sure to check it through substitution into the original equation. If any denominator becomes zero, then you do NOT have a solution.
@mathmale care to help me with one more? Im stuck on this one. i know theres no solution to the problem (non extraneous) but is it -4, or -8?
I think it'd be helpful if you were to try substituting all of the possible answers and deciding on the basis of your results which answer is the correct one. Please try this; then, if you still have doubts, contact me again.
