Simplify sqrt 48. I got 4 sqrt 3. is that correct???

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

:)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Mind showing how you got that? then I'd be more comfortable confirming or correcting your approach.

OpenStudy (cggurumanjunath):

U R RIGHT .

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That's what I got

OpenStudy (mathmale):

would you please let @Death_The_Kid respond first, showing his own work? Thank you.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IM A GIRL @mathmale thanks a lot. i don't really know how i got it i was working it out and the answer just popped in my head. I wanted to use openstudy to check my answer to make sure i wasn't going crazy

OpenStudy (anonymous):

IM A GIRL

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Oh? Sorry indeed! :) Let me assure you that you're not going crazy. Starting with Sqrt(48), think of one or more factors of 48 that is a perfect square. For example, 4 and 16 are both factors of 48.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

The most efficient way to go is to identify the largest perfect square factor of 48. What is it?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Uhm..... heh?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh eight

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think

OpenStudy (mathmale):

But, DTK, 8 isn't a perfect square, is it? If not, try again. Is 4 a perfect square? 16? 48?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jesh........

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hints: Perfect squares are: x x^2 0 0 1 1 2 4 3 9 4 16 and so on.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So: which of the following are perfect squares? 1,4,8,12, 16,48

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhhh

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 16 48 etc?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

according to the table I typed in for you, 1, 4 and 16 are perfect squares. 48 is not: Perfect squares are: x x^2 0 0 1 1 2 4 3 9 4 16 5 25 6 36 7 49 8 64

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh sorryz

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hope you'll keep this for later review. Now, among 1,4, 16, which is the largest perfect square?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Absol. right!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Factor 16 out of 48. What do you get as the 2nd factor of 48?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hint: 48 divided by 16 is ???

OpenStudy (anonymous):

three

OpenStudy (mathmale):

So Sqrt(48) can be re-written as Sqrt(16*3), right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh so i WAS right!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Yes, you were. And we are allowed to factor Sqrt(48) into Sqrt(16)*Sqrt(3). What is Sqrt(16)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4 sqrt 3!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY

OpenStudy (mathmale):

And so Sqrt(16)*Sqrt(3)= ( ? )*Sqrt(3)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

44444444444444444444444444444444

OpenStudy (mathmale):

cool. Oh, I love it when someone else comes to an undrstanding like this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

lol are you a math teacher?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Hope to see you again on OpenStudy! Best of luck to you. MM I tutored and taught Math on and off for 43 years, in Rochester, New York.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

All the best to you! Bye for now. :) MM
