x + y = 12 y = -5x Well you know that y = -5x...so you substitute that into the first equation for 'y' x + y = 12 Becomes x + (-5x) = 12 and simplify x - 5x = 12 -4x = 12 x = ?

Then once you solve that...you have what 'x' equals....so you would plug that into one of your 2 equations (lets do the second one) and solve for 'y' y = -5x after plugging in x = ...? you have y = -5(...?) Trying not to just say the answer :P
