solve and graph on a number line : |2x + 4| > 14 I already solved for the 2 solutions: 5 and - 9. But I don't know which direction to put them on a number line.

@campbell_st

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

well simply pick a value and substitute it... you said the values are 5 and -9 so pick a value between them... say x = 1 substitute it... is |2 *1 + 4| > 14..?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im confused, im not trying to solve the equation just put the 2 solutions I have on a number line...

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

i'm trying to show you a method that allows the number line arrows to be correct... so |2*1 + 4| > 14 its false so it means the interval between -9 and 5 isn't in the solution space... does that make sense...?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so my solutions are wrong? because in my options those are the only solutions possible

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

so pick a number larger that 5... say 10 then check is |2*10 + 4| >14 ? and pick a number less that -9 say -10 is |2*(-10) + 4| > 14 ? if there are both true you have the solutions for the number line x > 5 x < -9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok, I get it now. thank you

OpenStudy (campbell_st):

your solutions are correct.... they are the smallest values you can use....you need numbers larger than 5 and numbers less than - 9 |dw:1394227834516:dw|
