Set the function equal to zero. "f(x)=" is the same thing as "y=". When you set the function to zero, you're saying "What x values make this function spit out 0" or "When does this function cross the y=0 line (the x axis)?" Once set to zero, solve for x. Alternatively, you can use the quadratic formula: \[x = \frac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^{2} - 4ac}}{2a}, where: ax^2 + bx + c = 0\]
