The Alien and Sedition Actst were passed by the Federalists in the 5th United States Congress and signed into law by President John Adams in 1798 in the after the French Revolution and during an undeclared naval war with France. The Act increased the residency requirement for American citizenship from 5 to 14 years, and allowed the acting president to imprison or deport aliens who were considered "dangerous". They also restricted the freedom of speech, if it was critical of the federal government. Written by the Federalists, the laws were designed under the guise of national security, yet most historians conclude it was really intended to reduce the number of voters who disagreed with the Federalist party. At the time, most immigrants (the majority being Irish and French) supported the Democratic-Republicans. The answer is most likely A because the federalists would want to limit the Democratic-Republicans by limiting their supporters.
