That's the factorial sign. 5! = 5*4*3*2*1, and likewise for other numbers. So, rewrite the factorials like that: \[\frac{8!}{5!3!} = \frac{8*7*6*5*4*3*2*1}{5*4*3*2*1*3*2*1} = \frac{8*7*6}{3*2*1} = 56\]
