$59 power tool; 5% sales tax? help anyone?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Calculate 5% of $59 first, then add it to $59.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its that easy?:-)

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

5% of $59 = 5% * $59 = 0.05 * 59 Just multiply 0.05 and $59 to find 5% of $59 Then add that result to $59.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, it is.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im pretty sure i have the wrong answer....35.40?

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

Yes, it's wrong. You don't need to know how to calculate percentages to see that $34.50 does not make sense. If you start with a $59 item and ADD tax to it, you can't end up with a lower price of $34.50.

OpenStudy (mathstudent55):

First, just multiply 0.05 by $59 to find the tax. Can you do that? Then add that number to $59. The answer has to be greater than $59.
