17.99 CD;10% discount

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Alright do you know what to do?

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

\[17.99\times.1\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why *.1?

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

So you get the amount you will subtract.

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

You need to get the 10% of 17.99

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh :o

OpenStudy (beccaboo333):

Yeah you take the price then times the percent. Then subtract if it's a "discount" if it were a tax you'd add the amount. It's basically the same process. Understand?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its kind of confusing. I mean I know what you're talking about but its a little confusing

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Also it looks like you were confused with the percent turning into a decimal... 10 % is the same thing as writing 10 1 --- ...this simplifies to --- right? well when you evaluate that...you have .10 100 10 That is why you multiply it by .1 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so is it the same thing as 10%?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Correct! Just like 25% will be 25 1 --- = --- = .25 100 4 So 25% would be .25 And so on and so forth :)

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

So...when you want to figure out what a 10% discount will be off a price...you do that multiplication... 17.99 x .1 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg that is so much easier to look at :-)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1.799

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Good I'm glad :) And yes 1.799 is correct....that is what the discount does... it takes 1.799 off of the original price...so now that you want to know what the price is AFTER that...you just subtract it... 17.99 - 1.799 = ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

16.191

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

Correct....the final price after the discount will be 16.19 :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh THANK YOU SOO MUCH.. I really appreciate you taking your time and actually teaching me something. I think i dont need help anymore. You're Awesome!!!<3

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

OpenStudy (anonymous):
