I have this question that i am stuck with for the past 20 mins so I was thinking someone could help me so the question is below. Which of the following is NOT a solution of y=5x - 10 ? A. 5,20 B. 3,5 C. 4,10 D. 2.0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In D. i meant 2,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

plug in each of the values in the format (x,y) into the equation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ummm I am in 6th grade and I have no idea how to do that!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I typed what ASNinja typed but my message did not post. :(

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I don't know how to do that i only am in 6th grade even my parents don't know how to do this!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay so the first answer (A) is the points 5 and 20 correct?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

correct

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so each of the answer choices are in the format (x,y) so plug in each value into the equation for A 20 = 5(5) -10 \[20 \neq 15\]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So in the equation, there is an x and a y. (5, 20) are the x and the y. 5 is the x and 20 is the y.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x always comes 1st right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, (x, y)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thank you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

You're welcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I still don't know how to get the answer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Which of the choices when plugged into the equation is false?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ASNinja will probably explain it better than me.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Err i dont know

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But there is nothing that tells me what y or x is

OpenStudy (anonymous):

We just plugged in A, and got that 20 = 15

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Wait a minute I think I understand now

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that a true statement? Do you know what coordinates are?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The 1st number which is X i plug that in and the 2nd number is y so if i plug in X and solve it then Y is the answer.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yup I got it thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes, but if we plug in the values for A, it doesn't work, so the correct answer is A

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes i got the same answer right now!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Also i have a question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you graph an equation?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Not the one with slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Give me an example

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how do you graph y=x+3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

That equation has a slope of 1 so, |dw:1394502064555:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

But not the 1 with slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the one i have to do is different

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The equation you gave me has a slope of 1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y = 1x + 3

OpenStudy (phi):

Khan's videos might be helpful. For example, see http://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/linear-equations-and-inequalitie/graphing-slope-intercept/v/graphing-a-line-in-slope-intercept-form on one way to plot lines.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah. Take a look at KhanAcademy.org

Did you solve the problem?
