Karen and two of her friends are splitting the bill for their lunch. They each got back $2 in change after the $30 lunch bill was paid. Which of the following can be used to find the amount of money each girl contributed?

OpenStudy (ja1):

Hmmm, hold on I am a bit confused on the wording of this question.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (ja1):

Let's just do some eliminating, A says that you do:\[30 \div 3 = \] and then multiply that by 2, that gives us 20, is that a logical answer?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no

OpenStudy (anonymous):

d is the answer. multiply 2 by the number of girls subtract that from 30 and then divide the remaining amount by 3 and get the answer.

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_ D says "add 3 to 2" not multiply.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 WHOOPS i read the answers wrong

OpenStudy (ja1):

Anyways, it is not a logical answer because that would mean each girl gave 20 for a total of 60 which is not possible. So now let's look at B. 30 - 2 = 28 28/3 = ?

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_ It's okay, It happens to all of us :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be c, now that i read it right.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

why do you say c @professional_loser_

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_ the bill was 30 dollars and with C each girl would be paying 12 dollars which amounts to 36, not possible.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah thats what i thought

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are three girls. take the 2 dollars they each paid and add the up. you get six. add that to the amount of the bill and that is the total amount paid all together. then divide by the amount of girls and you get the amount each girl paid out in the beginning.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

they each got back not paid sorry.

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_ *high five* I kept thinking that we are looking for how much the girls paid without counting the 2 dollars per girl. xD

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 it is possible. if each girl paid 12 in the beginning and the bill is only 30 then they would only have needed to pay 10 so they each get two dollars back

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its a. because theres 3 girls. divide that by 30 it gives you 10. then divide it by 2 and it gives 5.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is that right @JA1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@kaylarusk no you want the amount each girl paid in the beginning.

OpenStudy (ja1):

@kaylarusk Unfortunately no, see if the girls paid 5 dollars then that only adds up to 15/30, @professional_loser_ was right, it is C.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 do you know calculus by any chance?

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_ What I know is too basic to be considered knowledge sorry.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh @JA1

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@JA1 how do you give medals?

OpenStudy (ja1):

OpenStudy (ja1):

@professional_loser_
