I need help with math anyone abe to help ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

Hello and Welcome to OpenStudy! :) what would you like help with?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

through: (4,-3), parallel to y = -2x

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

when a line in parallel to another line, their slopes are the same so could you tell me the slope of y = -2x ? :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

hint: it's in the form y = mx + b where b=0 and m=slope

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y is -3 right cause the x is 4 ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yes (4, -3) means that x = 4 and y = -3 :) I would like to know if you could find the slope of y = -2x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No my math teacher just gives us work and tells us to do it not explaing a thing

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

that's alright :) I'll try to help. there is this form called the slope intercept form where y = mx + b where m = the slope (as in how high or low it gets as you move to the right) and b = y-intercept (where the line crosses the y-axis line) do you follow so far? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

alright :) so for example if they gave you a equation y = 3x + 5 then the slope would be 3 and the y-intercept would be 5 do you see where I got my numbers? :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yeah I see where you got the numbers

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so then using that same idea could you tell me what is the slope of y = -2x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it 2x ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

close :) it would just be the number part of it and don't forget the negative :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ugh theirs no point in this I'm horrible in math and I have to pass or I will be kicked off all sports and be benched from track now and kicked off sorts next year :(

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

It's alright, I'll do what I can to help you learn :) here's another example like slope of y = -3 x would be -3 then, what is the slope of y = -2 x ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-2

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

You got it!!!! :D AWESOME so now you would have to make a equation given that the line's slope is -2 and given the point (4, -3)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

so now back to the y = mx + b idea you have now found that m = -2 but now you have to find "b" to complete the equation :) to find "b" you would Temperately plug in x = 4 and y = -3 into the equation so solve for "b" given -3 = (-2)*(4) + b

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do I times the (-2)*(4) first ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

Yes :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3=-8+b ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yes! :D then you would add 8 to both sides to get b alone

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5=b ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

DING DING DING WE HAVE A WINNER!!! so we have m = -2 and b = 5 which you can now plug into y = mx + b to get your equation! :D

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-3=-2x+5 ?

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

close :) the x=4 and y=-3 thing was only a temporary thing to get b so you get y = -2x + 5 you're really smarter than you think you are :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh I get it now YAY I GET IT FOR ONCE !!! :)

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

yay :D now that wasn't too difficult now was it? :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No It was easy and I wrote it down in my math notebook to look back at

jigglypuff314 (jigglypuff314):

that's great!!! see, you are smart :)

Thank you xD C:
