Going to coaching for preparation of Competitive exams is necessary or not?

mathslover (mathslover):

Here is the condition of the place where I live currently : i) It is a remote area and hence is very quiet and peaceful . ii) The school where I study is the prestigious institution of India - Kendriya Vidyalaya Sangathan. And there are about 7-8 students in my class in which only I am the student who is of A-1 Grade (Good students... ) , all other are below average . iii) I am aiming for competitive examination which is IIT ... It includes the weightage of Class XII (Grade 12) marks also - 40% weightage Most of the good colleges seek admission of students through the results of this examination (IIT - Indian Institute of Technology) . iv) In coaching classes, the students generally go to dummy schools ( in which they don't need to go to schools and just require to sit in the examinations. .. ) . While, if I stay here where I live then I will regularly attend my schools + Self Study with the help of video lectures purchased and some correspondence courses. v) My teachers say that I must go to Coaching institutions as I am talented and my talent will be given more finishing and I may get a very good rank. vi) The respected teachers also think that in my class, there will be very less competition and thus, I will not be able to check my ranking time to time i.e. where I stand ... vii) Though, my thoughts are : I think, a student must attend schools regularly I can do by staying here but the only problem with me is I can not concentrate on my studies much which is required to crack IIT Examination. I think, such a quiet environment is best for studies while in places like Kota (education city where are most of the coaching classes for preparation of IIT) there is not much quiet environment for studies. Even my brother ( @vishweshshrimali5 ) is doing very well staying here ... But teachers give excuse that he is God-gifted child and for that I have to be like him. Though, my brother thinks that I am completely like him and I can do it. The main confusion is, that should I listen to the honorable teachers who have more than 15 years of experience in teaching students or should I listen to myself who doesn't have any experience in this but knows what he can and what he can not. Any suggestions? @Preetha @hartnn @amistre64 @eliassaab @chmvijay @thomaster @e.mccormick

First of all, I would like to apologize that your question has not been answered in eight days. I would also like to let you know that I am just a freshman (ninth grader), but since I felt bad I am going to try my best to answer your question to the fullest. I also did extensive research and expanded my knowledge, hoping it will help you. c: So it seems that it is NOT necessary to join coaching classes for your competitive exams, BUT if you do, you will benefit from it. It will increase you regularity along with reducing time to learn some subject (therefore benefiting you in group studies). I also see "Normally coaching provides you a platform where you can appear in tests regularly. These days online coaching is also providing same experience." I do not know what this means exactly, since I do not know of this stuff, but I think it might be saying that you will be more confident in your exams. I don't know. cx Also, I think your teachers are [somewhat] right, if you have a talent, then pursue it - IF YOU LIKE IT. I mean, you have to do what you want to do. For example, I might be talented in law and stuff, but I want to enjoy my life, so I would want to pursue writing instead, but I would do some type of law while I write so I won't put my talent to waste either, or I would mix them together like authors who put their law experiences in their stories...just to give you an example. Obviously, I don't know if you WANT to do this or not. So, I helped all I can, sorry I couldn't help 100% and I hope everything was clear and non-confusing. Good luck. c; P.S.: Congratulations on becoming an ambassador. Thank you for what you do to better the OpenStudy community.

@kewlgeek555 That's quite impressive study as per a 9th Grader. I am really grateful to you for this report of your study based on Coaching Classes. You have mentioned some great points which is really impressive! I agree with you that if I have talent then I should pursue Coaching Classes but at the same instant I also think that I would better believe on myself and will prefer self-study over Coaching Classes. Going to coaching classes, I would have to join Dummy Schools (which is not necessary but to get enough time for coaching, you have to join dummy schools) which I think should not be followed/practiced by a student. "Normally coaching provides you a platform where you can appear in tests regularly. These days online coaching is also providing same experience." This actually means that : Online coaching/resources are available for the students which surely is better than Normal Coaching . The generation has gone far away from old practices and the technology has helped in building the Online Platforms for Education!
