You want to make five-letter codes that use the letters A, F, E, R, and M without repeating any letter. What is the probability that a randomly chosen code starts with M and ends with E?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Pr(1st letter is M) x Pr(last letter is E given that the first letter is M) 1/5 x 1/4 = answer The last one is 1/4 because after we know the first letter is M, there are 4 possibilities for the last letter

so it's .05

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Correct. or 1/20

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

could you possibly help me with another?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you! it's another word problem : A group of 8 friends (5 girls and 3 boys) plans to watch a movie, but they have only 5 tickets. How many different combinations of 5 friends could possibly receive the tickets?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The possibilities are 1. All 5 are girls 2. 4girls 1 boy 3. 3girls 2 boys 4. 2girls 3 boys Do you know how to calculate combinations? C(n,r) = n! / r! (n - r)! 1. C(8,5) 2. C(8,4) x C(3,1) 3. C(8,3) x C(3,2) 4. C(8,2) x C(3,3) Calculate each of those and add em up. And I apologize but i have to run an errand for the next 15 minutes or so.

ok thank you so much
