A truck used 6.3 gallons of gasoline to travel 107 miles. How many gallons of gasoline would it need to travel an additional 250 miles?

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

We can set up a proportion... \[\large \frac{6.3}{107} = \frac{x}{107 + 250}\] And then solve for 'x'

Thank you @johnweldon1993

OpenStudy (johnweldon1993):

No problem!

OpenStudy (mathmale):

That's certainly one way to approach this problem. Were you to solve for x, as johnweldon suggests you do, you'd find the total number of gallons of gas needed to drive 107+250 miles. Another approach would be to figure out how many miles per gallon the car gets ( rate). Then divide the extra 250 miles by that rate, to obtain the number of extra gallons of gas needed.
