Why do we study history. What is the importance of it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In history, there was a lot of problems between us and other countries because of something they don't agree with. It's so that our past offenses are never repeated again. So we learn from the mistakes of others in history before us. :)

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

We study History to understand ourselves. History is human behaviour, good and bad. It's the story of us.

OpenStudy (linda3):

History is taught to us because we need to know what happened back then and why it happened to avoid future mistakes such as the ones made back then. But not all history is bad some good things came about and we need to understand how that good effected the world. Every action and everything thing a person does effects the whole world. Even just by learning about somebody such as Anne Frank whom did nothing but hide behind a bookcase writing in her diary- shook the whole world's history. Learning what happened during the WW2 just from her diary can let us know the terrible acts of a holocaust and world domination- but it can also teach us how to go through hard times. Even though Anne Frank was scared for her life not knowing if the Nazi would find her the next morning/ always living in fear yet she lived life with joy despite her surroundings. ~This is just one of many great stories/lessons to be learned in the book of History. :)

OpenStudy (mexhitokiri):

If we do not study history, we are bound to make the same mistakes that other generations have made in the past.

OpenStudy (wwhitlock):

We continue to make the same mistakes in spite of studying history. Every generation thinks they can do better than the generation before. We have feeling of invincibility which causes us to think we can avoid the mistakes of the past while going down the same road.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

hy study history? The answer is because we virtually must, to gain access to the laboratory of human experience. When we study it reasonably well, and so acquire some usable habits of mind, as well as some basic data about the forces that affect our own lives, we emerge with relevant skills and an enhanced capacity for informed citizenship, critical thinking, and simple awareness.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

If you didnt study history... you wont know how your species came, ( or how human beings came), where did they come from, and why

OpenStudy (anonymous):

cool pic jt_cake so whats the problem?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need a few more ideas on why history should be taught

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The ones of there, they repeated each other like history is important so we don't make the same mistake.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that our society does not forget what has went on ith the past so we don't repeat history, for example, so something doesn't happen like the holocuast.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wellcome

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if you accidently dropped a plate and it broke, and you stepped on the glass and it made you get hurt and bleed. you would teach others so they dont get hurt right?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I need 3 more thought

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that don't repeat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

please

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok like reasons?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah,

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so you would teach your (son) and they will teach there (son) and so on. thats why we are learning what is good and bad. (kind of like simple manners)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and we are learning ourselves

OpenStudy (anonymous):

if we didnt study history we woudnt know who saved our country and people

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok we need to teach history to so we can remember what unites our bold country. If we didn't teach history, then how would we remeber how The USA came one day? we wouldn't.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks guys

OpenStudy (anonymous):

not even usa, but OURSELVES!!

OpenStudy (linda3):

I said quite a few reasons in my answer you can go look back and read it over again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we learn from the past? although we should try a little better in america. lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So that we can learn more about how the world was created, and how America grew into us today.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

grew into us? i need a doctor to get a whole country removed out of me.. is it contagious? lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@Macy86 How America grew into what it is today. :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohk lol bye :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

we study history because it is importaunt for us as people to remember who we are, where we came from, and how the world has been impacted, and by whom or what impacted it. if we didn't have history classes we wouldn't know who Thomas Edison was, or the wright brothers, world war 1 or 2, or the men and women that save the lives of the people of today. My gandfathers one on mothers and one on fathers side, both fought in ww2. I would like them to be remembered till' the earth ends. Its kind of like remembering legacies even if we don't remember the exact names of the men and women who helped the world be shaped as it is today, it is amazing how we can remember what they did for us. and how they shaped and impacted our lives today

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So we don't make the same mistakes again lool

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@iambatman that too =)

I love how people answered this question. Wish I could give more than one medals. But oh well. Anyways, it is true that we learn from our past mistakes, but learning history is important if you were interest in politics or reading daily news. The reason why a person doesn't understand what’s going on in their country or in other foreign countries, it’s because that person lacked some important information from history regarding a particular news event. If you’re watching the news, and want to understand the original cause of an event, you might as well research about its history. No history research, the more dumbfounded you’ll be when watching Al-Jazeera or CNN. Consequently, instead of surfing in the internet trying to gain more knowledge about a historical event and get biased information, why not attend a class that will provide you with a prepared significant evidences along with primary sources?
