-x+5y=10

graph the linear equation by finding and plotting its intercepts

OpenStudy (mathmale):

Pretty please include the instructions every time you post a problem. To find the x-intercept: Set y=0 and solve for x. Write the x-intercept as (x, 0). How would you then find the y-intercept?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I always put linear equations in the form of y=mx+b before I do anything. -x + 5y = 10 ==> 10 - x = 5y ==> y = -(1/5)x + 2 |dw:1395203341128:dw|

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Notice how y = 0 on the graph, so y = 0 in this equation.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@ConDawg : While your method will certainly work, why introduce the slope-intercept formula for a straight line when the directions to this problem specifically ask for the x- and y-intercepts, nothing more, nothing less? Find those two intercepts and draw a straight line through them.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@condawg : I respectfully disagree. x is not 10 when y is 0.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@amigatour: Right. But would you please help jamone find the intercepts and then let her draw the graph herself? Please?

OpenStudy (amigatour):

OpenStudy (amigatour):

Don't be thrown out of the wrong markings. LOL. It's an approximation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks guys. i got x=(10,0) and y= (0,2) am i right?

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@jamone : please show how YOU would find the x- and y-intercepts.

OpenStudy (amigatour):

@ Jamone: This is an intercept. There is no need to use the y=mx+b.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@jamone Yes...

OpenStudy (amigatour):

Don't forget your signs.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@jamone : Yes, the y-intercept is (0,2). Yes. But your x-intercept is not (10,0). Please show what you will do to obtain the correct x-intercept.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

-x+5y=10 -x+5(0)=10 x=10 therefore ordered pair is (10,0)

OpenStudy (amigatour):

No, that's wrong. Look closer.

OpenStudy (amigatour):

(_,0)

OpenStudy (amigatour):

I will be right back in 20 minutes...I have to study.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

(-10,0)

OpenStudy (mathmale):

@jamone, Great! You've got it! Just plot (-10,0) and (0,2) and draw a line through them. That's it!!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you.

OpenStudy (mathmale):

My pleasure! See you again on OpenStudy.
