please help!! y = x and y + x = 5 a. (-4,1) b. (1,4) c. (-3,2) d. (2,3)

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Err, none of the above? Check out y = x. That means the two numbers in (X,Y) have to be equal to each other, at least. Another thing is to give us some more instructions.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it just says find the solution to the system of equations by using either graphing or substitution .

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Hmm, did you write the answer choices out correctly? None of these would work.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i forget something in the problem. it is y = 4x and y + x = 5

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

Ahh ok. So this one is easy. We already have a lone variable equal to something: y=4x.

OpenStudy (ipwnbunnies):

We're gonna use substitution for this one. Plug in '4x' where you see 'y' in the second equation.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4x + x = 5 ?

OpenStudy (accessdenied):

Yup. Now you can combine like terms and solve for x. The resulting x-value will then be able to be used to solve for y in either equation (just by plugging it back in)
