Computer Science Question (cannot find CS forum) Need difference between Operating system and normal application softwares now i know the basic differences, like what OS is, and how it interacts with hardwares and how normal applications interact with users.. but are there more detailed points? more subtle and important or contrasting differences in their functioning, or something?? Any help is appreciated (if you find a nice link please do post it.. ) tried googling a lot :P..

@ikram002p

OpenStudy (whpalmer4):

The operating system manages the computer's resources, doling them out as needed to the user(s).

OpenStudy (phi):

you can think of the OS as the manager that coordinates the applications, and allocates which apps have access to the computer and its resources.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes yes. i am aware of the basic points.. but this is strictly from exam point of view.. like i said besides the basics are there some deeper points ?

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

can any one sketch it ?! if there is a relation btw SW and OS ?

OpenStudy (phi):

Depends on the details of the course. For example, there are different algorithms for how to schedule the run-times of the various apps, or how to control memory (virtual and real), permission/access schemes.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ikram002p give you details :P @phi its for ikram.. you guys carry on :P

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

ahaa so the main diffrence is OS is the ring btw user and SW ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@ikram002p I ALREADY TOLD YOU THAT X_X

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

@Mashy ty for posting :D

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

well , i know but needed more details hehe

OpenStudy (ikram002p):

ok so , in computer OS saved on which memory ?

OpenStudy (phi):

The OS is typically on the hard drive (including "boot areas" not accessible to ordinary apps). It may also be in Read Only Memory, and at start up loaded into "special" parts of memory not accessible to apps.
