The cost, in dollars, of retaining the services of a computer repairman in Anchorville is given by C = 48x + 18, where x is the number of hours worked. a. 48 signifies the hourly rate, and 18 signifies the overhead charge. c. 18 signifies the hourly rate, and 48 signifies the overhead charge. b. -48 signifies the hourly rate, and 18 signifies the travel cost. d. 66 signifies the cost for an on-site inspection

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

So let's say you get paid 5$ an hour for shoveling snow you worked 2 hours and made $10. can you write that out as an eq for me please?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

y=2x+5

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite there are no variables in the eq I asked

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

just basically how did you make $10?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok let me try again 2x5= 10

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yep perfect

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

actually first

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you shoveled snow for x hours at $5 and made $10. Can you write that eq for me?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x+10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@FibonacciChick666 correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

am i write

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

just look at the one without variables that you wrote for me

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

what did the '2' in that represent?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how many hours they worked shoveling snow

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so try again ok

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 10/5=2 so would it be 5x-10

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no, there is no plus or minus

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

the first part is correct

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

just the second isn't

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh ok so its just 5x then right

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

5x=what

OpenStudy (anonymous):

10

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

so write that whole thing out

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x=10

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

good so now, what does that imply about our 48 in your eq?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

that 48 is the hourly rate charged

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok good. so for the other part let's say, You shovel snow at 5$ an hour for 2 hours plus the cost to get there/use shovel and you make $15.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

call the cost to get there/use shovel, O. Can you write an eq for that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 5x +2=15

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

2?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i messed up didnt i im sorry i just dont understand math

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

it's ok, you're starting to get it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 5x =15

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

re-read then use the eq you came up with before where there were no variables

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

but remember there is another cost

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

the other cost is O

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so 5x+3=15 because 3x5=15

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

not quite, there is no x in our eq,

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

the only variable is O

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

remember how much money we make in 2 hours?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 0=5x3

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no, O has no relation to the amount you are paid per hour

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 5x3=15

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

nope, restart. If you work at $5 an hour for x hours and make 10 dollars. Write that again.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

5x2=10 so x=2

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

but you were not given x, you solved it but write it in terms of x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so like 10/5

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok,if 5*2=10 yes10/5=2 but, i just want you to write the first part in terms of x instead of 2

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok 5x=10

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yes perfect

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok do you understand why it is written like that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sort of

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok let's have you read this for me ok? http://www.austincc.edu/tutor/students/resources/Translating%20English%20Words.pdf

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

this explains key phrases that are used to go between math and english

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

it shows you how given words, you can write an eq.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yah its really helpful thank you

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

np so, do you get the (amount per hour charged)(amount of hours worked)=(total pay)?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so if she worked 48x+18 that means that the overall charge was $48 and for every hour she worked she charged an extra $18 right

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

alright so now we have another charge. It has absolutely nothing to do with what you are getting paid, it's flat rate always gets added to the bill. we want to incorporate that into our eq

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

no

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

remember C=48x+18

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

what is the 48? what did it look like in our eq?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

it was the total number of hours or 48x

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i have 9 min to complete this question

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

... sorry I can't help you any longer

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 48= the total # of hours and 18 equally the total amount of dollars charged per hour

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

this is considered cheating

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no it only a practice question

OpenStudy (anonymous):

im not on a quiz or test i promise

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

then why would you only have 9 minutes? I think not

OpenStudy (anonymous):

no i mean i have 9 min before my dad wants me to clean my room

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i dont cheat

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i have a ballet recidal to get ready for in 20 min so thats why

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

ok ok, fine. I'll trust you

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i give you my word and i cross my heart.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you still understand "do you get the (amount per hour charged)(amount of hours worked)=(total pay)?"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes i got it 48 signifies the hourly rate and 18 signifies the overhead charge

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

yes, that is correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OMG really i got it right no way :) thank you so much

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

you did, i really recommend watching these videos when you have time and starting on this first one https://www.khanacademy.org/math/algebra/introduction-to-algebra/variable-and-expressions/v/what-is-a-variable

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

they will help you to understand better.

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

have a good recital, break a leg

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you for all of your help you are a great teacher and a really good friend. thanks i hope i dont really break it but i know where your getting at and agian thank you

OpenStudy (fibonaccichick666):

haha yea, I didn't do ballet long enough to actually remember the terms they use. but anyways thank you, good luck, and please watch those videos when you have time

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok i will bye
