Why are enzymes known as biocatalysts?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

A catalyst is something that speeds up a reaction, but is used up in the process.

Hey @bobbyjhon and @metalman! Welcome to OpenStudy! Catalysts speed up chemical reactions without being changed at the end of the reactions. Enzymes are made of proteins which accounts for the "bio-" part and they speed up chemical reactions and remain unchanged at the end of the reactions. This is why enzymes are known as biocatalysts.
