So what is this j I keep seeing in the impedance formulas? R- (j/wC) complex impedance.

engineers use \(j\), whereas mathematician uses \(i\) to represent the positive square root of negative one. \[j^2=-1\]

this is because \(i(t)\) is used to represent the current as a function of time
