why is the saxophone belongs in the woodwind family

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Woodwinds are defined as instruments that need reeds to make sound. Saxophones look like they belong in the brass family, but they need reeds, so they are woodwinds.

OpenStudy (mchilds15):

Not only do they need reeds but, you have to blow in them rather then buzz, like you do with brass. A saxophone is just a large, shiny clarinet, honestly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because you need a reed for it and you need to blow in to it.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Because it has a reed and although it made of brass it uses keys and this is why it belongs to woodwind x
