Some coastal regions of the world have cooler summers and warmer winters than inland regions at the same latitude. What accounts for this difference in climates?
The latitude of an area - location between the equator and the poles - has a lot to do with its climate. Generally speaking, the closer an area is to the equator the hotter it will be. Other important factors are prevailing winds and ocean currents. The European side of the Mediterranean is further from the equator than is the African side. Europe is also influenced by the Westerly winds and the Gulf Stream/North Atlantic drift. They give the European Mediterranean a milder and wetter climate than the African side.
