Please help me! Will give medal! :) Eli pulls a letter tile from a bag that contains one of each letter of the alphabet. Match each description of the tile with its probability.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Match the term with definition a letter in his name or a consonant (Assume vowels are A, E, I, O, and U.) a letter in his name a letter in his name or S a vowel in his name A) one-thirteenth B) two-thirteenths C) twenty-three twenty-sixths D) three twenty-sixths

@ParthKohli help

Parth (parthkohli):

All right. Let's start with the easiest ones. What is the probability that a letter in his name pops up? Add your thoughts.

Parth (parthkohli):

There are three letters in his name, {e,l,i} There are twenty-six letters in the alphabet, which I don't have the patience to type all of lol

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1/26 is the probability of one letter... right

Parth (parthkohli):

yes.

Parth (parthkohli):

how about three letters?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

3/26

Parth (parthkohli):

there you go.

Parth (parthkohli):

how about a letter in his name OR S? hint: we are rooting for {e,l,i,s} that is four letters

OpenStudy (anonymous):

4/26

Parth (parthkohli):

there you go again. simplify the fraction.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

divide by 2 = 2/13

Parth (parthkohli):

yes! can you see where this is going? can you try to do the rest of the two? i'm supporting you =)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok let me try

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so a vowel in his name e,i...... so 2/26

Parth (parthkohli):

very good!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

but thats not in the options.... do i simplify?

Parth (parthkohli):

exactly.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

answer: 1/13

Parth (parthkohli):

yup

OpenStudy (anonymous):

a letter in his name or consonant 3/26 ...eli

Parth (parthkohli):

or consonant... so a lot of letters like b, c, d... etc. qualify.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 26-3

Parth (parthkohli):

let's see. a letter in his name or consonant. there are 3 letters in the name and 21 consonants, so the total should be 24. but because there is one letter common between both of them, we subtract one and end up with 23. so correct.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so 23/26

Parth (parthkohli):

anyway, that was the only option left so we can choose that without a doubt. :P

Parth (parthkohli):

yup.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg... thankyou for helping me!!!

Parth (parthkohli):

no problem!
