The first "trap" that Rainsford attempted was a very difficult route to trail, much like a fox hunt, with loops and doubling back. 300 yards away from the tree he stops to rest at, he builds his second trap, a Malay mancatcher, made from a dead tree balanced precariously on a cut living one. The trigger was a bough that General Zaroff tripped over. When activated, the dead tree fell and delivered a glancing blow to General Zaroff's shoulder. If it wasn't for his alertness, the general would have been killed. The second trap was a Burmese tiger pit, a hole dug into the Death Swamp that was filled with sharp carved stakes and covered by woven grasses. General Zaroff lost one of his best dogs to it. The third trap is a native trick, in which a hunting knife is tied to a springy bow and tied back by a wild grapevine. When released, this trap killed Ivan, General Zaroff's most faithful sidekick. The last "trap" is not a physical one but a mental one. Rainsford fooled Zaroff into thinking that he had committed suicide, but in reality has swam back to the castle. ~yahoo
