Your friend's paper contains great word choices to communicate the urgency of the issue she's writing about, which is why her audience should support funding to save the polar bear. You notice that her introduction contains only her thesis statement. Even though the thesis is strong, what advice should you NOT give her? A. Include a lead-in to get the interest of the reader in your introduction. B. Rewrite your introduction so that you have some background information. C. Write an overview of what the paper will cover. D. Your introduction needs a topic sentence.

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, what does an introduction need other than a thesis?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

topic sentence?

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Well, every paragraph has a topic sentence or there is one implied. However, there are some very specific things in an academic paper that should be covered in the first paragraph. Did your book/school site have a list? Because one of these will not be on the list.

no there isnt one that would have been more helpful if they did

OpenStudy (e.mccormick):

Ok, on this site: http://www.canberra.edu.au/studyskills/writing/introductions It has this nice little list: An introduction should do the following: alert a reader’s interest indicate the scope and direction of the paper, and act as a navigation guide to its reading. show the reader how you are interpreting and approaching the question provide a context for the main issue indicate the focus of the paper indicate your conclusion and point of view So, do you see a couple of those that should be in the intro (which means they are the wrong answer.)
